Looks like a baseball bat. It would seem things have changed quite a bit since I lived there.
It is Claes Oldenburg’s Batcolumn sculpture. It is approximately 100 feet tall and was built in 1977. You can find out more here.
Ahhh...now I understand why I hadn't seen it before. Most of my time spent downtown was either along the lakefront or around the Loop and north Michigan Ave. There simply weren't enough hours in the day (or days in the year) to see everything for the short time I lived there.But thanks for the link.
